CSC399Y – Computer Scientists & Entrepreneurship
(with Professor Arnold Rosenbloom & ICUBE UTM)
Course Offerings: Fall 2017
The goal of this study is to understand the challenges facing Computer Scientists in a startup environment and identify the background, temperament, technical skills, personality traits, communication skills and motivation needed to participate successfully in a modern tech startup.
Students will gain a start-up experience while working alongside start-ups at ICUBE UTM. They will, observe and understand the startup experience and culture provided by ICUBE, as they work through their own startup. This will engage them with entrepreneurial culture, training and research skills. They will reflect on the experience their Computer Science background brings to the table as well as the entrepreneurial tools
and skills lacking in a typical Computer Science undergraduate experience. They will suggest approaches to expand awareness and interest in entrepreneurial culture, for example, approaches to increasing ties between and awareness of programs such as ICUBE.
Students will gain a start-up experience by attending specialized entrepreneurship training at ICUBE UTM and working with start-ups and on their own venture concepts. Training will be alongside ICUBE companies for approximately 4 hours per week exploring entrepreneurial topics of:
1) Business Initialization : Learn to Fail Fast to Succeed
2) Business Modeling : What works and what hasn?t
3) Exploring and Understanding Markets : Who, What, Why
4) Resources: People & Money
5) Building a Business Plan
6) Funding: Couch Surfing or Condos
Students will be responsible for participating in entrepreneurial activities with cross-program collaborative teams in ICUBE and in computer science. Participants will then report about their experiences and propensities to starting their own companies. Students will journal about their experiences and track their tasks in ICUBE’s online task management system.
The role will also include a ‘make-it-happen’ component where the student will either work on their own venture concept, or join with an active start-up in ICUBE to work towards a start-up solution of a problem.
They will be evaluated both on their successful engagement with ICUBE as well as their final experience report as outlined in Objectives and Methodology.
The ROP student will have excellent grades in computer science, be energetic and engaging and have a desire to explore and grow in the entrepreneurial space.
